Cats Complete Home Sweep of AAMU

Wildcats improve to 12-6 in conference play

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Halyne Gonzalez nearly missed a shutout as the B-CU offense did the rest in a 5-1 win over Alabama A&M to sweep the series, Saturday afteroon at Sunnyland Park.

Header How it Happened

An Alabama A&M (7-22, 3-8 SWAC) leadoff single turned into a quick double play as  Shanai Owens sprung on a popup bunt and fired to first to nab the runner.

Bethune-Cookman (14-24, 12-6 SWAC) quickly pounced for a pair of runs a Essence Gibbs walked, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Jessica Alaan RBI single. A few batters later, Briana Velazquez pushed a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Alaan to make it 2-0.

The Wildcats tacked one on in the bottom of the third as Alaan came in to score again courtesy of a Bulldogs throwing error.

Alabama A&M loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on only one hit with a single, walk, and hit-by-pitch, but a groundout ended the threat. They put a pair on an inning later, but another groundball stopped the Bulldogs' hopes short.

One more B-CU rally in the sixth made it 5-0 as CIera Clark entered to pinch hit with two runners on, sending a ball into the gap in right to score Thais Uyema and Velazquez.

AAMU gave it one more try in the top of the seventh, with a leadoff single and RBI double to make it 5-1, but a popup ended the contest.

Halyne Gonzalez earned her ninth win of the season with a complete-game in which she allowed only one earned run on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Thais Uyema was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a run scored. Jessica Alaan continued her strong weekend with a 2-3 afternoon with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Briana Velazquez also chipped in an RBI.
