DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kalil Camara's offensive rebound with two seconds remaining and a Southern foul was the difference as the Wildcats knocked off the SWAC's top-seeded southern, 70-69, Saturday night at Moore Gymnasium.
FIRST HALF
Bethune-Cookman (14-15, 11-5 SWAC) took command immediately with an 11-2 run in the first five minutes of play before Southern (18-10, 13-2 SWAC) rallied for 10-2 run of its own to pull to within 13-12 at the 13-minute mark.
Kalil Camara's three made it a 22-16 B-CU lead just past the 10--minute mark in the first half, but a Derrick Tezeno layup just after the under-eight media timeout made it a one-point game again at 24-23, B-CU.
B-CU made it a six-point advantage again with under five to play on a
Trey Thomas layup, but three straight buckets and a B-CU turnover allowed Southern to tie things at 32-32.
The Jags took their first lead fo the game at 35-34 with a minute until the half, but a
David Onanina jumper as time expired sent the Cats to the break in front 38-37.
SECOND HALF
A Cam Amboree three saw Southern retake the lead at 45-42 four minutes into the second half. That lead reached six as Onanina's missed fast break dunk turned into a Tezeno and-one with 11 minutes remaining, and later eight on a B-CU turnover and PJ Dubuol jumper.
Southern saw its highest lead of the game at the 7:30 mark on a pair of Joe Manning free throws that made it 63-50.
The Jaguar lead remained as high as nine with under five to go, and as much as seven with under three to play. An Onanina free throw and Camara three ball trimmed the deficit to three - an Onanina jumper off a Southern turnover gave the Cats the lead again at 69-68.
Southern tied things up at the free throw line at 69-69 as Michael Jacobs made one of two with 16 seconds to go.
With just four seconds remaining, Thomas fired up a desparation three, but Camara was there for the rebound, ultimately taking a foul from Jacobs to head to the line.
Camara drained the first, purposely missing the second to see time expire for the Jaguars with B-CU in front, 70-69.
- B-CU sits alone in third place in the SWAC standings - just a half-game behind Jackson State for the second place spot.
- With 11 conference wins, B-CU ties its highest-ever conference win total of 11 with two games remaining on the season.
- B-CU out-rebounded Southern, 36-30.
- Trey Thomas led the way for B-CU with 20 points with three rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
- Calil Camara finished with 18 points on 5-6 shooting with a 4-5 clip from three, two rebounds, an assist, and three steals.
- Jesus Carralero Martin grabbed six boards with seven assists, two blocks, and four steals.
B-CU returns to Moore Gym to host the penultimate game of the 2024-25 regular season on Monday, March 3. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
