MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball stranded 10 runners across two games Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats fell to Binghamton and Bellarmine by mirror 2-0 scorelines on the second day of action during the Make It Happen (MIH) Games at R.O.C. Park in Madeira Beach, Florida.
Â
BINGHAMTON 2, B-CU 0
Brianna Santos and Bella Farina combined for four hits Saturday afternoon in helping Binghamton to a 2-0 shutout win over Bethune-Cookman in the day's opening game of day two action as part of the Make It Happen (MIH) Games taking place at R.O.C. Park in Madeira Beach, Florida.
Â
Binghamton (8-5) kicked the fifth inning with a Bella Farina single, followed by the left fielder working her way into scoring position with her first stolen base of the year at second. A Santos ground out moved her to third before a
Briana Velazquez throwing error to first with two outs allowed Farina to cross safely and break the deadlock, 1-0.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (6-14) looked to answer in the home-half of the sixth when catcher
Thais Uyema began the Wildcats at-bat with a single to left field. However, back-to-back pop-ups on sacrifice bunt attempts allowed Binghamton starting pitcher Brianna Roberts to work out of trouble as B-CU left fielder Emma Brasley-Tse laced a two-out single to left. Roberts would close the frame with a strikeout – her sixth of the afternoon.
Â
Binghamton added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to step ahead, 2-0.
Â
Second baseman Maddy Dodig led off the frame with a single to left. Two batters later, Lindsey Walter's two-out RBI single down the line in left pushed across Dodig to seal the win.
Â
Roberts went the distance on the rubber for Binghamton, upping her record to 5-1 for the season. The right-hander fanned seven batters with zero (0) walks and scattered four hits in earning the win. The loss went to B-CU senior right-hander
Halyne Gonzalez, dropping her to 4-10 for the season. Gonzalez also pitched a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits, amassing five strikeouts and allowing two walks.
Â
The Binghamton offense used equal 2-for-4 outings at the dish from right fielder Brianna Santos and Farina, respectively. Walter finished 1-for-3 with the game's only RBI.
Â
The Cats offense was propelled by Velazquez with two hits in three trips, as Uyema and Bradley-Tse also accounted for Maroon and Gold hits in the contest.
Â
BELLARMINE 2, B-CU 0
Bethune-Cookman stranded six runners Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats fell 2-0 to Bellarmine in softball action on day two of the Make It Happen (MIH) Games housed at R.O.C. Park in Madeira Beach, Florida.
Â
With two runners on for Bellarmine (3-6) in the home-half of the sixth inning, Knights designated player Chloe Collins delivered a two-run single to the wall in right field, bringing around Harlie Bickett and Jadyn Thompson.
Â
The Knights carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh.
Â
Aysia Gonzalez and
Thais Uyema drew walks from Bellarmine reliever Selena Zuniga before the hard-throwing right-hander registered a strikeout of pinch hitter
Molly Blackwood to close the game.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (6-15) had one of its best opportunities to score in the top of the sixth when left fielder
Emma Bradley-Tse singled and advanced to second off the end of a sacrifice bunt from second baseman
Jessica Alaan.
Kendall Macauley sent a ball to the wall in right center that appeared to get over the head of Knights centerfielder Thompson, but the catch was made in dramatic fashion as Bradley-Tse was doubled up at second.
Â
B-CU had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of third with the game still scoreless.
Â
Gonzalez worked a base on balls to begin the inning, and a
Joslynn Davis single moved the Wildcats first baseman to third – while Davis rook second on the relay from the outfield. But it would be Bellarmine starting pitcher Claire Lehmkuhler inducing a hard grounder back to the circle from Bradley-Tse to retire the side and end the threat.
Â
The win went to Lehmkuhler (2-4) as she tossed five frames, posting three strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Zuniga worked the final two innings to collect her second save of the year, producing two strikeouts and just a single hit surrendered.
Â
The loss went to B-CU starter
Alyssa Lopez (2-3) as she went five innings in the circle, giving up two runs on two hits and a strikeout.
Alyssa Brady pitched the sixth for the Maroon and Gold, as the sophomore gave up just one hit and recorded a strikeout.
Â
The Bellarmine offense was carried by shortstop Bickett with a 1-for-2 day and a run scored, as well as Collins with a 1-for-3 showing adding two RBIs.
Â
B-CU received hits from three different Wildcats – Davis, Bradley-Tse and
India Stokes, respectfully.
Â
The Cats close out the MIH Games on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., when taking on UAlbany back at R.O.C. Park.
