@BCUSoftball Sweeps SWAC Weekly Awards

Wildcats earn awards across the board

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman Softball swept the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekly awards for the period of March 12-18, announced Wednesday afternoon from the league office in Birmingham, Alabama. Shania Owens grabbed Co-Hitter of the Week, while Alyssa Lopez earned Pitcher of the Week, and Emma Bradley-Tse was Newcomer of the Week.

Shania Owens was named SWAC Co-Hitter of the week, sharing the award alongside Jackson State's Jace Jackson, respectfully. Owens, a senior infielder from Inglewood, California, batted .455 last week in games against Mercer and Jackson State. In the JSU series, she powered out her second home run of the season in the SWAC series opener, finishing the two-game stand with four hits, three runs, two RBIs, one (1) double and a home run altogether.

Alyssa Lopez is earning her second SWAC Pitcher of the Week award, having also earned the distinction in week two of the season. The Fontana, California right-hander went 1-0 last week helping the Wildcats even an eventual two-game series away to Jackson State. She carried a 1.45 ERA in the series, working 9.2 innings, scattering six hits, allowing just two earned runs and striking out 14 batters. She matched a career-high eight strikeouts in a relief effort during the series opener to the Tigers.

Emma Bradley-Tse, a junior outfielder that transferred into B-CU from Salt Lake Community College, rode a seven-game hitting streak through the JSU series, finishing that series batting 5-for-7 with a run scored. In the Wildcats game two win to even the series, the Richmond, British Columbia native was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, allowing her to finish the weekend sporting a .714 average, adding three stolen bases, adding to putouts defensively from her left field position.

Bethune-Cookman welcomes Florida A&M to Sunnyland Park for a three-game SWAC series this weekend, beginning with a single game Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m.
