JACKSON - Miss. - The Wildcats evened up the weekend series thanks in part to five Jackson State errors in a 9-5 win, Saturday evening at Braddy Field.
Bethune-Cookman (11-12, 4-1 SWAC) put the first two batters on to start the game via a hit batter and walk before a flyout advanced both to scoring position for
Jorge Gonzalez Febo. He opened the scorign with an RBI single to center, scoring
Darryl Lee.
After another walk, back-to-back RBI knocks for
Irvin Escobar and Reinaldo Plasencia put the Cats up 3-0 quickly.
Jackson State (14-8, 2-3 SWAC) took one back in the bottom of the first on a leadoff solo shot.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second with a double, single, and fielders choice, followed by an RBI single to make it 4-3, JSU.
The Wildcats took the lead back for good in the third after two straight walks to open the frame, folloewd by a
Jorge Rodriguez RBI single and an
Irvin Escobar RBI lineout to left that made it 5-4.
After a quiet fourth, B-CU added to its lead off the Tigers bullpen, loading the bases with one out and scoring a run on a JSU wild pitch.
JSU took the run back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-5.
B-CU added two in the sixth and one in the ninth, both on Jackson State errors, to drive home the 9-5 win.
Joel Core earned his second win of the year after seven innings of work in which he scattered three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Jean Carlos Zambrano worked two clean innings with two strikeouts.
The rubber match of the three-game series is set for a 2 p.m. EST first pitch Sunday.
