Golden Lions Surge Past Wildcats

PINE BLUFF, AR - Despite trailing at the break, Arkansas–Pine Bluff delivered a dominant second-half performance to pull away for a 77–54 win over Bethune-Cookman at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

 Header How it Happened

1st Quarter
Bethune-Cookman (3-14, 1-3) and Arkansas - Pine Bluff (5-10, 2-3) played a tightly contested first quarter, with the scored tied at 16 heading into the second.

B-CU got off to a hot start, taking an early 7-2 lead at the 6:18 mark. UAPB would respond with a 13-2 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Wildcats then went on another run of their own, 9-1 to close out the quarter.

Kailyn Peters had the hot hand early on, scoring eight points during her first quarter minutes. As a team, the Wildcats made seven of their nine field goal attempts (77.8%) while the Golden Lions made six of 11 (54.5%). Each team had six turnovers.

2nd Quarter
The second continued the back and forth trend as neither team could sustain a lead for very long.

The teams both shot 6-of-12 in the quarter, but the Wildcats made two three-pointers in the quarter, giving them a two-point edge going into halftime.

3rd Quarter
Arkansas - Pine Bluff had all the momentum going their way in the third, beginning the quarter on a 14-0 run. The Wildcats' first bucket came from Mya Johnson at the 4:30 mark.

B-CU fought to get back within striking distance. Janessa Kelley hit a three-pointer to cut the lead back down to seven. But Pine Bluff would close out the quarter on a 7-0 run, giving themselves a 14-point cushion heading into the fourth.

4th Quarter
UAPB used dominant defense to close out the win, holding the Wildcats to just three made field goals (all three-pointers). B-CU struggled at the free-throw line, shooting just 50% while the Golden Lions made nine of their 10 attempts.

Arkansas - Pine Bluff won by a final score of 77-54.

  • Janessa Kelley led B-CU with a season-high 14 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.
  • Tyler Butler finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
