Wildcats Stage Late Comeback, Finish off Tigers in OT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half to beat Texas Southern 79-69 at Moore Gymansium. The overtime win is the Wildcats eighth straight, the longest winning-streak for the program since the 2010-11 season.

1st Half
Bethune-Cookman (13-11, 10-1) got out to an early 10-5 lead, going on an 8-2 run after trailing 5-2. Texas Southern (7-15, 5-6) quickly tied the game at 10 with 12:11 remaining.

The remainder of the half went back-and-forth, with both teams unable to generate any momentum offensively. The score was consistently within one possession, and the game was tied 31-31 at the break.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first. B-CU shot just 29.6% (8-for-27) but were able to hold the Tigers to 37.9% shooting.

The Wildcats found success from three-point range, converting on four of nine attempts. They also got to the free-throw line 14 times, converting on 11 of those opportunities.

Tyler Andrews led the Wildcats with eight points, while Bryce Roberts paced the Tigers with eight of his own.

2nd Half
Texas Southern got off to an excellent start in the second, as Bryce Roberts hit two consecutive three-pointers to give the Tigers a two-possession lead.

TSU was able to further increase its lead to 13 with 12:24  remaining in the game. The Wildcats began the half making just one of its first 10 shot attempts.

After the Tigers retook a 13-point lead with 10:21 left, the Wildcats finally got going offensively. B-CU would make seven of its next 13 shots, including three-pointers by Tyler Andrews and Jakobi Heady, as part of a 20-5 run to take a 57-55 lead.

The two teams traded leads during the final four minutes. Jaylen Wysinger made a jumper with 41 seconds to give the Tigers a three-point lead, but Arterio Morris found Seneca Willoughby in the corner for a three-pointer to tie the game.

The Wildcats were able to get the stop on the Tigers' final possession to send the game to overtime.

The two teams shot below 40% from the field in the second and combined to shoot 7-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Overtime
Texas Southern's Jordan Gorecki split a pair of free-throws to give the Tigers a one-point lead. But from there, the Wildcats completely dominated the overtime period.

B-CU went on a 9-0 scoring run to take a 73-65 lead with 1:33 remaining. Daniel Rouzan made two key baskets in the paint during the stretch.

TSU would get the score to back within five, but could not overcome its own shooting struggles, as the Wildcats closed out the victory.

As a team, the Wildcats went 4-for-4 from the floor in the extra period, while holding the Tigers to just one made field goal.

  • Tyler Andrews led all scorers with 17 points. He made four three-pointers, tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven, and added an assist, two blocks, and a steal.
  • Jakobi Heady scored 16 points and collected six rebounds.
