Marcus Brown is in his fourth season with the Bethune-Cookman Track and Field program, serving primarily as a throws coach.
During the 2017-18 seasons, Brown played a key role in helping Jeremiah Peters sweep the Outstanding Field Performer awards at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor and Outdoor championships. In 2017, he coached Catoria Sirmons to her sweep of the shot put and NCAA East Preliminary appearance.
Peters swept the indoor and outdoor shot put championships in 2018, and competed at the NCAA East Preliminary in the event. Brown also coach Akassja White to a Weights throw title at the 2018 MEAC indoor championships.
“I wanted to come to Bethune-Cookman because of the track and field program under director Donald Cooper, and I wanted to be a part of what he has been building here in Daytona Beach,” stated Brown. “I love the tradition and what Bethune-Cookman Athletics displays in both the conference and country when it comes to excellence and the knowledge of how to win.”
Prior to Bethune-Cookman, Brown spent two years at Coppin State University in Baltimore. While there, he also served as an athletics academic counselor as well as an assistant track and field coach working with throws. He coached the 2016 MEAC Outdoor Men’s Field Event Athlete of the Year (Steven Thomas) in addition to the 2016 MEAC Outdoor Women’s Discus Champion (Kristen Deacon). Thomas would go on to win the Discus on the men’s side.
As an athletics academic counselor, Brown monitored academic progress, eligibility status and maintained class schedule and enrollment records for over 50 student-athletes, while also participating in the recruiting process to provide prospects with information concerning academic support services for student-athletes. He also assisted with monitoring and calculating Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for all assigned teams, traveled with assigned teams and provided study hall opportunities for student-athletes while away from campus.
In the sport of track & field, Brown designed and implemented throws specific training programs for seven student-athletes, and provided academic and personal guidance to all student-athletes in the program.
Aside from academic counseling and track, Brown helped serve with student-athlete development and assist with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). These duties entailed presenting an alcohol awareness seminar to all CSU student-athletes, as well as collaborating with career services to hold a résumé building workshop. He was also the chair of the SAAC Banquet Committee.
Brown is a 2014 graduate of Clemson University, earning a degree in Psychology and minoring in Education. At Clemson, Brown ran track & field for the Tigers for two years (2012-14), being named a two-time NCAA East Region qualifier, as well as a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) silver medalist at the ACC Championships. He would be a two-time All-ACC Team member and finish his career third all-time on the Clemson shot put record list. Other accolades include being the 2014 Pepsi Florida Relays title holder, while competing unseeded heading into the annual event. He was also the 2014 Raleigh Relays shot put champion.
Prior to Clemson, Brown began his collegiate career at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he was a three-time MEAC champion in the shot put (twice) and discus. He was three times named to the All-MEAC First Team, and is still third all-time on the Hawks records list for the shot put and weight throw.
