James Whitener is entering into his second year with Bethune-Cookman University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach under Medgar Harrison in the Department of Athletics. While at B-CU, he will work directly with women’s basketball and volleyball, while assisting with football, baseball and both the men’s and women’s track and field programs.
Whitener arrived at B-CU in 2014 from Liberty University, where he served three years as an intern in athletics working with strength and conditioning. While at Liberty, he also worked towards his master’s degree in sports administration, achieving the degree in 2012, specializing in Sports Administration.
Prior to Liberty, Whitener was employed at Elite Athletics, LLC, as well as the C.B. Pennington YMCA in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A 2008 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, specializing in Fitness and Human Performance.
James Whitener is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), in addition to the United States of America Powerlifting (USAPL). He is also a certified member of the World Association of Bench Pressers and Deadlifters (WABDL) and American Powerlifting Association (APA). Some of his certifications include American Heart Association as a healthcare provider (CPR, AED, First Aid), as well as a licensed Foundations of Group Exercise Instructor.
In 2008-09, Whitener was selected as the Undergraduate Student of the Year in Fitness and Human Performance at his alma mater, Southeastern Louisiana.
