Jimmie Russell Named Co-Offensive Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 3, 2006

Virginia Beach, Va. - Junior quarterback Jimmie Russell has been selected as this week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week as released earlier today from the MEAC home office in Virginia Beach, Va. Russell shares this week's accolades with Hampton University wide receiver Marquay McDaniel who earned Most Valuable Player (MVP honors against Grambling State in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge in Birmingham, Ala.

Russell, a 5-foot-9, 175-pounder from Jonesboro, Georgia, orchestrated some of the best drives in his career on Saturday night from his quarterback position, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell a point shy against Southern University in the 53rd Annual Gateway Classic, 30-29, in Jacksonville, Fla.

On the night, Russell completed 13-of-22 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns--spreading the ball around equally to Paul Neufville, Johnathan Summers and Victor Johnson. Russell also rushed for another 94 yards and one TD score on 18 carries throughout the ball game. His touchdown rush on a quarterback sneak up the middle with 11:30 remaining in the contest put B-CC up 29-24. Overall, Russell accounted for 18 of the Wildcats 29 points on the night.

This is the fourth time in his career that Jimmie Russell has been named as Offensive Player of the Week since taking over at the helm of the Wildcats vaunted "Wyattbone" offensive option attack just two years ago as a freshman. Russell picked up Player of the Week honors twice last year against Savannah State (Oct. 1) and against North Carolina A&T (Oct. 29), as well as once as a freshman following the Walt Disney Florida Classic against Florida A&M where he was selected as the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
