Three players collected Top-10 finishes over the weekend to help Bethune-Cookman University rally for a second place finish at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational in Estero, Fla. The event was held at the Miramar Lakes Golf Course, and it was hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
Trailing the leader by 21 strokes after shooting a 317 in the opening round on Saturday, B-CU used a strong performance on Sunday for one of the greatest comebacks in school history in the sport of women's golf. The `Cats shot a 622 for the weekend to finish just two strokes off the leader, shooting a whopping 305 as a team on Sunday.
Freshman Kimberly Wong shot a 151 (76/75) to finish seven-over for the weekend with yet another solid performance. As a freshman, she has now collected back-to-back Top-5 finishes in her first two (2) collegiate events. Wong's performance was good enough to allow her to finish fourth overall.
She would finish just one stroke off a possible three-way tie for second place. A pair of Florida Atlantic players--June Bolme and P. Phol-uayporn earned the second place ties with a 150 (+6) in the two-day event.
Also assisting with the comeback efforts for the Wildcats was Becky Dowell with her normal Top-10 finish as she shot a 154 (+10) on rounds of 81 and 73. It was a very windy weekend in Estero, and Dowell was one of just three golfers able to escape the winds on Sunday's round with a 75 score or lower.
Junior golfer Emma Tayler finished up in the Top-10 as she secured a tie for eighth place, shooting a 155 (+11) on rounds of 78 and 77. Tayler's round of 77 on Sunday was one of four Wildcats to collect a round of under 80. Maria Garrido also played well for B-CU as she shot 87 and 86 to finish up with a total score of 173 (+29).
Florida Atlantic, after shooting a 296 to lead the event on Saturday, seemed to be one of many schools suffering from the extremely windy conditions on Sunday as gusts were up near 40+ mph. The Owls finished just three strokes off the leader for a third place finish.
Host Florida Gulf Coast shot a 307 and 313 for a combined score of 620 (+44) to win the event.
Stetson's Danielle Jackson rounded-out the Top-5 golfers with a score of 152 (+8) in the tournament.
Bethune-Cookman heads back out to the course again on Oct. 11 when they travel north to Piscataway, N.J. Once there, they will take part in the annual Rutgers Fall Classic hosted by Rutgers University. For more information, please contact the B-CU Office of Sports Information at (386) 481-2206.
