Jacksonville Defeats Bethune-Cookman in Volleyball, 3-0

Oct. 18, 2007

Box Score

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University was unable to fight-off a tough Jacksonville University squad on Thursday night as they fell to their visitor's from the north by a count of 3-0 inside Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla. JU won the match on scores of 30-16, 30-17 and 30-21.

JU (13-10) collected astounding 15-team blocks a month ago in Jacksonville. That number was cut down drastically tonight, but the blocks they collected were big for the Dolphins.

Bethune-Cookman (5-10) fought hard in the first game behind the play of Danielle Goodrum and Chelle Ticeson. The two players helped at the net and with hard, pounding hits down the middle against a very tall JU blocking core.

The Dolphins were too much at the net, however, as Melissa Merchant and Sara Bendorf laid down kills. Behind them, the power from the outside of Kesley Clark was too much for the Wildcats to handle.

B-CU did fight hard all night long, as defensive efforts from freshman Alyse Guzman and Shakhea Moore-Hagins did not go in doubt as they collected 17 digs between them. Both players were detrimental to the `Cats stopping the hard power of the Dolphins from the attacking aspect of the match.

Ticeson did manage to assist as well with her usual "blocks party" of three on the night ... two solo.

In the end, JU ran their winning streak out to at least the last six matches against the Wildcats dating back to 2005.

Brittany Lehman and Bendorf each had eight kills for the Dolphins, while Clark led the squad with nine on the night. Hannah Munneke was the assist-maker with 38, while Michelle Walroth led the Dolphins with a match-high 18 digs.

Goodrum's eight kills led B-CU. Behind her was Kaiyana Johnson with six kills. Julie Gibson had 24 assists, while Keisha Vicks and Guzman each had a team-high nine digs a piece.

The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman now travel back into MEAC waters against South Carolina State at 2 p.m. inside Moore Gymnasium. The `Cats fell to the Bulldogs of SCSU by a count of 3-2 last month in Orangeburg, S.C.
