Bethune-Cookman University collected their first conference win of the season on Saturday with a 3-0 decision over Norfolk State University at Moore Gymnasium on Daytona Beach, Fla. B-CU collected the win on scores of 30-21, 30-28 and 30-26.
Bethune-Cookman (4-8, 1-2 MEAC) used strong performances from Keisha Vicks and Chelle Ticeson to hurt the Spartans of Norfolk State from the outside and middle.
NSU (4-19, 1-2 MEAC) entered today's contest having erased a 31-match losing streak in the league by defeating South Carolina State last week.
The Wildcats collected a .239 hitting percentage for the match while their counterparts from Norfolk, Va. Hit just .145 on the day. The Spartans, however, did accumulate 13 total blocks--including six (6) from Heather Quinn to try and even the match at the net with B-CU's obvious height advantage.
The Spartans of NSU used the play of Yolanda Roberts (nine kills / 11 digs) and Chantel Cherry (nine kills / 13 digs / five blocks) on the match.
The Spartans led 27-25 in the second game before B-CU closed out the contest with a 5-1 run aided by the play of Ticeson and freshman setter Julie Gibson with tips over the net on set-attacks.
The sets for NSU were made by Solange Honore with a match-high 32 assists, while also collecting a match-high 14 digs on defense. The Spartans, however, hurt themselves with 20 attack errors, as well as five service errors and five blocking errors at the net.
B-CU was led by Vicks with a double-double performance of 10 kills and 11 digs. For Vicks, it was her first double-double of the season.
Right behind her was sophomore Ticeson with a team-high 11 kills, six digs and four blocks (three assists). Kumiko Chow collected 27 assists while teammate Gibson pitched in with 14 of her own.
