Box Score
Jacksonville, Fla. -
Bethune-Cookman University was no match for a quick-paced scoring outburst from Jacksonville University on Friday night as they fell by a count of 76-45 in a non-conference match-up in Jacksonville, Fla.
Bethune-Cookman was unable to finally break into the scoring column on Friday night as the northern coast of Florida proved to be just as harmful to the Wildcats as South Florida [USF] and Central Florida [Stetson] over the course of the past week. The `Cats were also playing their third game in four days, as the road and tiredness may be finally catching up the young Francis Simmons coached squad from Daytona Beach.
JU (3-0) was said to have collected their best performance of the season, according to head coach Jill Dunn, as a plethora of Dolphins helped out in a variety of ways all over the court. As for Bethune-Cookman, the Wildcats were once again sparked by the play of one (1) player ... and it was just not enough.
Despite her second consecutive double-double of the season, senior Natasha Ferguson was unable to lead the Wildcats (0-3) by herself on this night against a scrappy Dolphins squad.
JU rolled out to an insurmountable 41-26 lead at the half, and they kept the pressure on in the second half as they built up a lead that would swell to 26 points at 63-37 with just over six minutes left to play.
A 9-0 run sparked by Danielle Gray's four-point outburst during the stretch built up the lead for the homestanding Dolphins.
Bethune-Cookman's Ferguson and Ta'tiana Ingram tried to slice into the lead, but JU's Virginia Gregoire banged in two three-point baskets down the stretch to keep the striking Wildcats at bay.
Gregoire finished with 13 points for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins also used a commanding 30-8 advantage on point off turnovers as the Wildcats committed 24 turnovers on the night. That was followed up by the rebounding efforts that allowed JU to score 20 second-chance points to B-CU's eight.
JU won the battle of the boards over the `Cats, 46-32.
The Dolphins of Jacksonville were paced in scoring by Ashley Williams with a season-high 21 points, while Gray added 15 points and four rebounds. Helping out with 13 points each, respectively, were Regina Omoite and Gregoire.
B-CU was led by Ferguson with her double-double efforts of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Traci Fountain shipped in with eight points and two steals.
The Wildcats will be back in action again on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they continue their four-game road trek to the University of North Florida for a game slated to begin at 7 p.m. For ticket information, please contact the UNF Ticket Office through their official athletic website at www.UNFospreys.com.
