Savannah, Ga. -
Chris Dunn finished in sixth place overall with a 148 to help lead the Bethune-Cookman University men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the annual Savannah State University Tiger Fall Classic in Savannah, Ga.
Playing at the hallowed Henderson Golf Club in suburban Savannah, Ga. was anything but what the Wildcats expected over the weekend. They got off to a bad start, but bounced back nicely in the second day of competition.
B-CU shot a harrowing 315 on the first day, only to leap back with a 304 in round two. The Wildcats sat in a tie for fifth place after the first round, and it was just too much to overcome as Fayetteville State--a member of Division II, shot a 296 for the lead ... and eventual team victory.
Chris Dunn shot a 78 on the first day, but finished off his weekend in blistering fashion with a 70 to end out six-over par (148). Behind Dunn was Dan Venema with a tie at the seventh place position as he collected a 149 (+7) on rounds of 75 and 74.
Kevin Lyles of Fayetteville State was the overall medalist with a 142 (E) as he tied with Doug Smith of Florida A&M. Lyles, conversely, earned the tie-breaker to claim the medalist honor. Lyles' teammate, Jeremy Ringled, finished in third place with a 144 (+2).
Also shooting well for the Wildcats was Juan Ronderos with a 159 (+17) to finish in a tie for 22nd place, as well as Sean Edey finishing in a tie for 33rd place with an unusual round performance of 81 and 84 to post a score of 165 (+23).
The only other B-CU golfer was Troy Coker who had a two-round performance of 81 and 85 to finish with a 166 (+24) and tie for 35th position.
Notably absent from the event was Carl Corbin and Willie Mack III as B-CU head coach Gary Freeman decided to get some of his other golfers some experience against some good competition from both Division I and II.
In team comparison, host Savannah State finished in second place, while Virginia State--also Division II and a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with Fayetteville State, was in third place. Alabama State, coming in behind the fourth place efforts of B-CU, rounded out the top five teams.
Spencer Slade (SSU) and Jerel Whiting (VSU) rounded out the individual top five.
