B-CU Fall Short against North Florida in Women's Basketball, 62-43

Nov. 20, 2007

Box Score

Jacksonville, Fla. - The University of North Florida proved too much down the stretch for visiting Bethune-Cookman University on Tuesday night as they upended the Wildcats by a score of 62-43 inside UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

Back-to-back trips to Jacksonville proved to have much of the same result on Tuesday night as the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman (0-4) were unable to break into the win column with a very inexperienced freshman team. B-CU fought hard for most of the night, but was just unable to collect the win in the end.

UNF (1-2) used what has been the solution for a speedy B-CU team all season long so far--bench points, as the Ospreys collected a dominant 30-8 advantage in that category.

The Wildcats jumped on top early in the game behind hot shooting from freshman Demetria Frank and Cleniece Roberts to skate out to a 6-0 advantage right from the start. In fact, the `Cats held UNF scoreless through the first four minutes of the game. That, however, is where the Ospreys started to warm up.

UNF used a quick 14-2 run, sparked by the play of Jennifer Guldager and Juliemay Syquio with outside shots and paint points, to run out to a 14-8 lead. It was a lead that they would never relinquish the rest of the way, despite a tough run here and there by the `Cats.

UNF extended their lead at the half out to 28-19.

In the second half, B-CU junior guard Traci Fountain started to heat up as she scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second half.

Frank scored four points for the `Cats in the second half herself.

But the play of UNF's Willonda Windham and Guldager was too much down the stretch for the `Cats to overcome by their competitors from the northern beach of Jacksonville.

The free throws for the Wildcats were also a problem as the Ospreys outscored B-CU by a decisive 20-8 advantage at the foul line. UNF toed the line 28 times, while connecting on 20 of their shots. B-CU made just 8-of-18 free throws, on the other hand.

B-CU was also outmanned on the boards with a 40-25 benefit going to the Ospreys.

Fountain, as previously stated, led the Wildcats in scoring with 12 points. Behind her was Frank with 10 points and a game-high five assists.

The UNF Ospreys were led by Windham and Syquio with 10 points each. Guldager added eight points and seven rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman will be back in action again on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. against Charleston Southern at home in the friendly confines of Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla. For more information and ticket prices, please contact the B-CU Ticket Office at (386) 481-2292.
