DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Delaware State got out to a fast start with 26 first half points and held on to beat Bethune-Cookman 26-20, Saturday at Municipal Stadium. DSU Sr. QB Vason Winton accounted for 249 yards of total offense (147 passing, 102 rushing) and three touchdowns in the MEAC road win.
Bethune-Cookman (4-2, 2-2, MEAC) had its three-game winning streak snapped by the Hornets before 9,136 fans attending the 2008 Homecoming game. B-CU trailed at halftime 26-13 and the two teams were scoreless in the third quarter.
So. QB Matthew Johnson (B-CU's third quarterback who played Saturday) threw a 43 yard touchdown pass to Jr. WR Jeff Pope with 2:42 remaining in the game to put the Wildcats within 26-20.
A Bethune-Cookman's on-side kick was recovered by Delaware State (2-3, 2-1, MEAC) and the Hornets ran out the clock for the victory.
The Wildcats, the top ranked rushing team in the MEAC averaging over 250 yards a game, were limited to 141 yards rushing on 39 carries with So. RB Brian Sumlar leading the B-CU rushers with 65 yards on 14 carries.
Freshman QB McKinson Souverain ran for 23 yards and passed for another 48 yards (8-4-1) as B-CU used three QBs in the game.
The Wildcats are off next Saturday and play October 25 at Winston-Salem State, 2 p.m. kickoff in North Carolina. B-CU's next home game is November 1, 4 p.m. hosting North Carolina A & T on Youth Sports Day.
