DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Rocky patches in each half made problems for the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman, Monday night at Moore Gymnasium. In each half, B-CU found itself in a hole and clawed back into the game both times, but in the waning seconds, it wasn't enough as the Lady Wildcats were downed by Stetson 74-73.
At the tipoff, it took a little time for the Lady Wildcats to get on track finding themselves down by six, but B-CU responded and kept it close. However, the Stetson Hatters kept after B-CU with attacking plays and quickness, allowing them to push the lead to double-digits around the 12:00 mark in the first half. The hatters pushed the lead out to as much as 13 before the Lady Wildcats responded strongly. With five minutes to go in the half, B-CU began to cut into the lead and rally heading into halftime, narrowing the deficit to just one point with :25 on the clock. However, the Hatters responded with a solid play and took a three-point lead into halftime, 41-38. Despite the slow start, B-CU went into halftime with a season-high for first half scoring and an opportunity to take control of the game.
In the second half, the Lady Wildcats came out strong and kept the game close, though they stayed just behind Stetson. Strong rebounding by the Hatters kept them in control of the game, making several second-change opportunities. With the game tied at 53 at 12:38 in the second half, Stetson went on another run, pushing the lead back out to 11. As time ran down, the Lady Wildcats responded, cutting the lead to one with just :43 seconds remaining. They held the Hatters on defense and were in a position to put the game away, but couldn't get a shot to fall as the final buzzer sounded.
Leading all scorers and rebounders in tonight's game was Sarah Bolden, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Right behind offensively were Keturah Newkirk, both finishing with 15 points. Frank also snagged 5 steals. Despite the loss, the forwards were all putting in work tonight, as Euneshia Proctor grabbed 7.
For now, the Lady Wildcats get a short break over the holidays before heading back out on the road to face Savannah State, Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. to close out 2008, and then again in Moore Gymnasium on Jan. 5th at 7:00 p.m.
