Bethune-Cookman sophomore Willie Mack III shot a two-under 70 in the final round and defeated Johnson & Wales (Fla.) David Vanegas by one stroke to win the 43-man roster in the FAMU Spring Invitational on Friday at the par 72, 6,998-yard Killearn Country Club in the capital city of Tallahassee, Fla.
Mack III wins the 36-hole event with a three-under 141 to become B-CU's first medalist since the fall 2007 season, when Carl Corbin won the Black College Invitational. Mack's third top-five finish of the season helped the Wildcats to a first place finish at the eight-team event hosted by Florida A&M University, as B-CU finished with a two-day total of 582 strokes to finish at six-over for the tournament. For the Wildcats, this was their first victory in the early spring season.
"I thought Willie had a bad outing for himself last weekend, and he is such a competitor that he wanted to bounce back strong this weekend," expressed B-CU head coach Gary Freeman. "He puts pressure on himself to do well, and the pressure made him into a diamond this weekend for us."
All four Wildcat scoring players landed in the top fove for the annual event, as senior Carl Corbin took a tie for third with a one-over 145, and teammates Troy Coker and Dan Venema tied for fifth with a four-over 148. The two Wildcat golfers stroked a one-over 72 in the final round, respectively. The FAMU Spring Invitational marked the first event since the 2006 season that B-CU placed three or more players in the final top five.
B-CU golfer Sean Edey, playing as an individual golfer, carded a seven-over 79 in round wo and tied for 27th place with a 15-over 159. Senior Chris Dunn shot a two-day total of 162 (+18) to finish the tournament tied for 32nd overall.
"This was a good tournament for us this weekend because we got good production from all of our golfers," added Freeman. "This is a good way to continue the season after a good weekend at home last week. I am happy about the season so far, and I hope it contintues the same way."
