WILDCATS DROP MEAC OPENER AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 28-19

Charleston, S.C. - South Carolina State (2-1, 1-0) beat Bethune-Cookman (1-1, 0-1) 28-19, in the 2008 MEAC football opener for both teams.

All-MEAC RB William Ford rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns to key the Bulldogs offense (275 yards rushing, 486 total yards) in the win.

B-CU DB Antonio Cox returned an interception 93 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to tie the score 7-7, at halftime.

Matthew Johnson started at QB for the Wildcats with McKinson Souverain a game time decision and not able to start for B-CU. Johnson threw for two touchdowns and totaled 155 yards in offense.  Souverain played briefly when Johnson was injured during the game and third QB Devin Bradley also played two series for the Wildcats.

South Carolina State went ahead  14-7 in the third quarter before Johnson's 31 yard touchdown pass to Jean-Gardy Fanor (So. WR) cut the decifit to 14-13, Freshman PK Matt McCutcheon missed the extra point.

SCSU scored two straight TDs to go up 28-13 in the fourth quarter and Johnson's 21 yard TD pass to Joe Singleton closed the scoring (28-19) with 3:20 remaining. B-CU missed a two-point conversion attempt and the Bulldogs recovered an on-side kick and ran out the clock.

B-CU next plays at home Saturday, 4pm vs. Savannah State University at Municipal Stadium.
