Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Wildcats 2008 home opener was a success with a 28-7 victory over Alabama State (0-2) of the SWAC. B-CU dominated the stats outgaining the Hornets 370 (225 yards rushing, 145 passing) to 171 in total offense.
Sophomore running back Brian Sumlar led the offense with 114 yards rushing on 22 carries and two touchdowns. X-Receiver Joe Singleton (Sr.) caught seven passes for 94 yards and one touchdown (a 19-yard pass from Sr. QB McKinson Souverain, in the second quarter).
QBs Souverain (8-4-0, 51 passing yards and 43 yards rushing on 7 attempts) and Jr. Matthew Johnson (12-9-0, 94 passing yards and 29 yards rushing) split time running B-CU's "Wyattbone" offense.
The B-CU defense picked off three ASU passes and limited the Hornets to only ten first downs and 46 rushing yards in the contest played before sunny skies and low-to-mid 90 degree temps in Central Florida.
The Wildcats led 14-7 at halftime, and added one third quarter and one fourth quarter touchdown to seal the victory before 8,172 fans at Municipal Stadium.
Bethune-Cookman (1-0) plays at South Carolina State next Saturday to open the MEAC season in Charleston, S.C.
