PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Like many games this season, the Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball made a strong push for the win late in the game after falling behind early, only to come up just a little short in the end. The Lady Wildcats went into a dry spell after starting off strong, allowing the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore to go on a 16-3 run early in the first half. The Lady Hawks overcame two B-CU rallies in the game to eventually go on to win 72-65 in this conference battle.
In the opening minutes of the game, B-CU came out firing, grabbing an early lead. However, UMES grabbed the lead and the momentum back as they took off on a 16-3 run, finishing up near the midpoint of the half. The Lady Wildcats dug down, focused, and fought their way back into the game, making their own run of 16-6 to make the deficit only one point with 1:35 remaining in the half. The Lady Hawks, however, were not done yet, pushing back out to a lead of 35-28 heading into halftime.
B-CU came out of the locker room a little cold, but maintained their composure as UMES got hot, playing sound defense and taking good shots to keep the game within reach. At the 15-minute mark, however, UMES launched another scoring run, making it 10-1 this time and making a 13-point lead. No sooner did the Lady Wildcats get the run stopped, than they proceeded to make a run of their own of 18-3 and taking a 2-point with just over five minutes remaining in the game. UMES came storming back, grabbing the momentum for good on a Tiffany Reid three-pointer to break the game's third tie and put the Lady Hawks on top for good. UMES eventually went on to hold off B-CU and win 72-65.
Atop all scorers for Bethune-Cookman was Jasmine Daniels, who has come on as an offensive force in the month of January for the Lady Wildcats. Daniels scored 16 points on 7 of 14 shots, and snagged 5 rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures, Sarah Bolden earned her seventh double-double of the year, leading B-CU with 10 rebounds and also scoring 11 points.
Now for the Lady Wildcats, a short break; but then its right back to work as they return home for two games before going out on the road for four consecutive conference games. Next for the Bethune-Cookman is the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State, who travel to Moore Gymnasium for a 2:00 p.m. matchup on January 31.
