CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University Women's Basketball ran up against a major challenge, Wednesday at the BankUnited Center, as they faced Riquna Williams and the Hurricanes of University of Miami. Early in the game, the score remained tight, but the Hurricanes separated themselves and never looked back, going on to win 88-46.
In the first part of the first half, the Lady Wildcats showed a stark difference from the remaining game, providing a reason for optimism as they kept the score extremely tight. The Lady Wildcats kept the margin within only a few points in the early going. However, as UM gained a five-point lead with just under eleven minutes on the clock, their offense began to cut loose and the Hurricanes snuffed out the momentum that B-CU had seemingly built.
In the remaining eleven minutes of the first half, UM launched a 25-9 run, capitalizing on turnovers, and second chance opportunities, to take a commanding 40-19 halftime lead.
Coming out of the locker room, UM showed no signs of slowing down, and the Hurricanes' leader, Riquna Williams got into the flow of the game, scoring 20 points in the second half. The Wildcats generated more offense and earned more second-chances, collecting ten offensive rebounds in the second half, and scoring 27 points, leading to UM downing B-CU 88-46.
Shots were not falling for the Lady Wildcats, shooting 26 percent in the game, but turnovers were really what did the most damage. B-CU committed 24 turnovers in the game, while Miami scored 33 points off turnovers. Size and speed played a huge factor in tonight's game, as UM scored 31 total points on the fast break, and 42 points in the paint.
Leading Miami offensively, Riquna Williams scored 29 points, while Diane Barnes grabbed 14 rebounds.
Head Coach Vanessa Inge went to her bench extensively throughout the game, with every player logging minutes in the game. Freshman center Porche Anderson spent her longest time on the court this season, logging 20 minutes, and co-leading the team in scoring with Sarah Bolden led the team on the boards, tallying 16 rebounds. Demetria Frank collected 4 steals in the game.
The Lady Wildcats have another big match-up this week, heading to Orlando at 7 pm on Friday, Nov. 20, to take on the Lady Knights of the University of Central Florida at UCF Arena.
