DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Control of the lead was a battle from start to finish, but the Lady Wildcats often had a grip on the momentum of the game. However, late in the second half, the shooting trail went cold for B-CU, while UMES started to light up offensively, pushing out to a 10-point lead, which they would eventually carry to the final buzzer, winning 70-60.
The contest looked like it would be a low-scoring game, as the two teams had only notched a 3-4 score after six minutes of play. However it wasn't for lack of attacking the basket; with a combined 22 shots taken in the opening six minutes of the game. It was only a matter of time before the shots started falling, and when that time came, a shootout ensued. It remained a close game, within two scores the entire half. The first half was a battle from the start, with six ties and nine lead changes in the first. The Lady Wildcats pulled ahead with just over a minute remaining in the half, and carried it into the locker room, up 27-26.
At the opening, whistle of the second half, it appeared that nothing had changed, as the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore and Lady Wildcats continued to exchange leads deep into the second. Much like the opening half, there were eight more lead changes and three ties in the first seven minutes of the second. However, the Lady Hawks shut down B-CU's attack and got hot themselves, making a small run to go up by six at the midpoint of the second half. Despite the tightness of the game, UMES outscored B-CU three to two once they claimed the lead with thirteen minutes remaining, never surrendering it again. B-CU fought back into position, but UMES made crucial shots to seal off the Lady Wildcat rally, going on to win 70-60 at Moore Gymnasium.
With fellow forward Euneshia Proctor out of the lineup for this matchup, Sarah Bolden played big for the Lady Wildcats tonight, leading the team in scoring and rebounds. Shooting 58% from the field, Bolden finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, also notching a block and grabbing 2 steals. Also finishing in double-figures, Jasmine Daniels also finished with 12 points in tonight's game.
Three games remain in the 2008-09 regular season for the Lady Wildcats, as Bethune-Cookman rematches with conference foes over the next ten days, starting with a road trip to Orangeburg, S.C. for South Carolina State, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m.
