Spartanburg, S.C. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman volleyball took on their second match in as many days, traveling to face South Carolina Upstate. B-CU took the opening set, but host USC Upstate rallied for a 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-22, and 25-16) victory Saturday.
B-CU pulled away from an 18-18 tie in the opening set, scoring three unanswered points to take a 21-18 lead and finishing the set on a 7-1 run.
In the third set, the Lady Cats held a 17-12 lead, but the Spartans rallied with nine straight points to turn a five-point deficit into a four-point lead at 21-17. The Wildcats got within two, 24-22, but an attack error gave Upstate the set.
Morgan Thomas and Mindy Quimbu each had 10 kills for Upstate, now 10-15.
Kaiyana Johnson led the Lady Cats (7-21) attack with 11 kills and three assisted blocks. Jessica Wilson each had seven kills, while Jacqueline Woodyear finished with a match-high with 23 digs. Kat Agson added seven assisted blocks, a team high for season, leading a season-best blocking performance for the team with 13 blocks. Alexis Bliese led the setters with 16 assists on the day.
The LadyCats (7-21) return to the Sunshine State, briefly, taking on coastal foe Jacksonville in a rematch at JU's house. The last time out against the Dolphins, B-CU was in a position to win at many times, but couldn't finish off JU, falling 3-0 at home.
