DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman volleyball came up against their toughest opponent in tonight's match with North Carolina Central, themselves. The LadyCats fell, 3-1, to NCCU, after leading or holding the upper hand in each set lost. The LadyCats were unable to finish off the Lady Eagles.
The first set was the closest all-around set, but B-CU built a 12-8 lead and showed promise to move ahead further. NCCU came right back to tie it up at 13. After getting out of the tie, B-CU held a small lead until NCCU broke from a 20-all tie, finishing the set with four straight B-CU errors and a Lady Eagles Kill, winning 25-20.
The LadyCats came out firing in the second, building a 9-3 lead, but untimely errors and passing brought NCCU back into the set, making their first tie at 10-all. With B-CU up 22-21, NCCU again came from behind on four straight B-CU errors and a kill to claim the 25-22 victory.
In the third set, B-CU started to shine, and looked like they had arrived. The LadyCats completely dominated NCCU in the third, making several multi-point scoring runs, with the biggest (6-0 run) coming with Jennifer Jimenez at serve. The LadyCats truly finished off the Lady Eagles in this set, winning 25-10.
It looked like the tide had turned, and spectators were in for a five-set match. Especially as B-CU jumped out to double-up on NCCU early in the fourth, with a 12-6 lead. However, NCCU crawled back in, and by mid-set the teams were trading scores. There were ten ties and four lead changes in the set. Down 23-23, a Sydney Smith kill set the appearance that B-CU had more to go, but NCCU ended it quickly with a solid kill and a B-CU error to close the set.
B-CU hit a team attack percentage of .136, with a total of 24 errors on the night. However, they really came around in the third, hitting .375 as a team, with only one error in the set.
Jessica Wilson led the team on the offensive, collecting 14 kills on a .205 hitting percentage, while also collecting nine digs. Kaiyana Johnson had 7 kills, including 3 solo blocks. Jacqueline Woodyear each collected 13 digs.
Up next for the LadyCats is the conference home opener, Sunday at 3:00 p.m., as South Carolina State travels to Moore Gymnasium.
