DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Anytime someone beats Wake Forest, people take notice. Especially if that team is your next opponent.
Bethune-Cookman's very, very aware about Stetson's signature win over the Demon Deacons last Friday, which has added to Tuesday's matchup of the Volusia County rivals in historic Moore Gymnasium. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
"My guys are alert," said B-CU coach Clifford Reed. "If Stetson had lost, we wouldn't have given them our full attention. We're very attentive now."
And also happy for their cross county rival.
"[Stetson coach] Derek Waugh and I are friends and colleagues," Reed said. "He knows about us and we know about them."
While the Hatters were tripping an Atlantic Coast Conference team, B-CU opened its season with an 85-49 victory over Edward Waters behind 23 points from C.J. Reed and three other players in double figures.
What Coach Reed will be looking for is how the Wildcats crash the boards with Albert Abrahams still out with an injury against a Hatter team featuring 6-10 Graham Radford and 6-8 28- Steve Forbes in the post.
"Stetson's big and physical and aggressive down low," Coach Reed said. "Rebounding will be the biggest issue. All five of our guys need to be hitting the boards."
NOTES: B-CU is looking for its first 2-0 start since 1999 ... Coach Reed is 1-2 vs. Stetson; Wildcats' last win in the series was a 71-65 decision in 1998 ... CJ's now at 1,038 career points and 20th on the all-time scoring list; James Turner (1985-1989) is 19th with 1,097 ... is Javoris Bryant scored 14 against EWC after finishing 2009-2010 managing just 16 points in his final five games
