Reed With 19 Points/9 Rebounds/5 Assists, Dukes Scores 17, Abrahams 16 Points/5 Rebounds In Win
Freshman guard Kevin Dukes keyed a B-CU 21-4 first half scoring run over a six minute span, going from six points down to 11 points up (35-24) with 3:24 left in the first twenty minutes.
Dukes buried four long three-pointers and hit another field goal for 14 points scored in the first half and 17 overall in the game, leading the Cage 'Cats to a convincing 74-48 win over Winston-Salem State at the Ocean Center.
Winston-Salem State (7-12, 4-5 against MEAC teams) came out strong in the opening 10 minutes and the Rams led 20-14 with 9:20 to play in the first half.
Then Dukes and the Wildcats got hot. The diminutive 5-9 freshman sharp-shooter hit four three-pointers in the next six minutes to key the B-CU comeback and build the lead to double digits.
"I am elated with the win and to get off the two-game losing skid," said B-CU Head Coach Cliff Reed. "The guys did great and gave a great effort and our defense limited them to 48 points and only 40% shooting. We got back to defending and playing hard and getting out in transition and getting easy baskets off the break. It was a good win and will help us get ready Friday for Coppin State."
Bethune-Cookman (13-9) led at halftime 35-25 and pushed its way out to a 20+ lead for most of the second half out-scoring the Rams 39-23 in the second half. WSSU was led by Paul Davis and Shelton Colton with 10 points each.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore scoring and assist leader C. J. Reed with an all-court game of 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Reed's scoring complimented Dukes 17 and Albert Abrahams hit 7-8 field goals to score 16 points and five rebounds. Alexander Starling had a career-high 6 steals to key the defense.
B-CU shot 29-54 field goals in the game (.537 %) and the 'Cats out-rebounded WSSU 31-27 in the win.
New Starting Lineup Featured Team Captains, Two Freshman, And Abrahams
