#23 ranked UCLA and pitching ace Trevor Bauer beat the Wildcats 10-3 Saturday night at the MLB Urban Classic. The featured game was shown live on the MLB TV Network and the night included the "Battle of the Bands" competition with the Wildcat Marching Band vs. Southern University.
"Trevor Bauer is one heck of a pitcher and his breaking ball was outstanding," said B-CU Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. Bauer struck out 13 batters and the Wildcats did hit two home runs in the game - Justin Hoyte and DJ Leonard went yard off Bauer.
Wildcats With Four Home Runs In Two Games
Hoyte's two run homer to right field in the third inning cut the UCLA lead to 4-2. The Bruins (2-0) built the early lead as B-CU starter Julio Morales (0-1) walked six batters and hit two others in 3.1 innings worked. "We need to be better off the mound and our pitchers need to throw strikes. Walking nine batters tonight is too many. We have to get better and throw strikes, controlling the game from the mound " said Coach Melendez.
DJ Leonard hit a pinch hit home run to left field off Bauer in the sixth inning making the score 8-3. C. J. Lauriello, B-CU's top returning hitter from last season (.403) was taken to the hospital for tests Saturday night and his status is day to day. C. J. started in LF and was 0-2 vs. UCLA before coming out of the game.
UCLA out-hit the Wildcats 9-4 and B-CU's offense was limited to the two home runs and two other singles (Ryan Durrence and Peter O'Brien). O'Brien showcased his throwing arm with two assists in the game.
RHP Chris Anselmo and Patrick Goelz also pitched in relief of Morales.
"Other than the four home runs in two games, we haven't had many base runners," said Melendez. "We have to be tough outs, we have to battle, battle at the plate and put better innings together offensively."
The Wildcats (0-2) play Southern University, 2 p.m. PST on Sunday in the final game of the 2010 Urban Classic Tournament. B-CU's Rayan Gonzalez, sophomore RHP will get the pitching start vs. SU.
