DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Aside from a smile from Matt Johnson when told that his pass efficiency rating is nearly 100 points better than Tim Tebow's 2009 final number, no one at Bethune-Cookman's Wednesday media luncheon bragged about the statistical onslaught the Wildcats are enjoying.
B-CU leads the nation in six categories, including rushing offense, scoring offense and pass efficiency. Whatever.
(For the record: Johnson's current pass efficiency rating is 263.24. Tebow led the FBS division with a 164.17. Yes, we know it's a very long stretch.)
“I guess you could find something in that,” Johnson smiled. “But that's not our mindset. Our focus is winning as a team and playing as a team.”
Head coach Brian Jenkins echoed Johnson's comments.
“The sense of enjoyment comes when you see the 'W', Jenkins said. “We would have been just as elated if we had won 7-0. If we rush for 200 and win, that's fine, throw for 300 and win, that's fine, but we rush for 50 and win, fine, or even throw for ten and win, fine.”
Defensive back D.J. Howard said the defense wants to match the offensive display this weekend against Savannah State.
“You can expect a lot of great things from the defense,” Howard said. “We took advantage of the bye week. You'll see more of a sound defense.”
NOTE: While joining Johnson gives a shoutout to his front line, Howard also extended best wishes to his alma mater, Spruce Creek, for winning last Friday against Kissimmee Liberty two days after Jordan Peterson suffered cardiac arrest at a practice.
