DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman volleyball closed out play on Saturday at the inaugural Beach Bash Invitational, wrapping up the tournament with a 2-1 record. After defeating Providence in three straight close sets on Friday, B-CU cut close, but could take down the Friars a second time, falling in the tiebreaker game for a 3-2 loss.
Obviously feeling the sting from the loss Friday, Providence came out strong, taking command early on the heels of an 8-3 scoring run. The Friars kept their distance, leading by as many as eight, carrying on into a 25-18 win to open the match. However, B-CU was quick to bounce back, opening up set two with a 7-0 run to dig a large hole for PC. The Friars rallied to within three, but B-CU kept them at arm's length, leading to a 25-21 victory. In the third, the set remained close, but PC created a little cushion near mid-set, holding serve at key times to generate the 25-16 win. In the fourth, B-CU fired back, taking charge late in the game, after trading scores and leads the entire time, scoring four straight points to finish off the 25-21 win.
Sent to tiebreaker, Providence gained the upper hand early, collecting four unanswered scores twice in the match. PC led by as many as six, and traded scores with B-CU to finish off the 15-10 win, and a 3-2 victory in the match.
Jacqueline Woodyear was the dig leader for the LadyCats at 15, but hitters Davis and Jessica Wilson weren't far behind, collecting 11 and 10 respectively.
The loss breaks B-CU's unbeaten streak at home, but the team showed great focus in fighting to stay in the match and finish on top. The next match for the LadyCats (4-12) is coming quickly, as Jacksonville comes to Moore Gymnasium on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
