VOICE: Smith Becoming Leader On Defense

Sept. 18, 2010

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The last time a Bethune-Cookman defensive back recorded multiple interceptions in a single game was in 2006 against Norfolk State when safety Bobbie Williams recorded three.

Junior safety, Arkee Smith had his first career multiple interception performance today against Savannah State with two picks in the Wildcats' 42-7 victory.

"I had a good idea of where the ball was going from watching film and seeing that the quarterback doesn't look off his wide receivers before throwing to them", said Smith. Smith was more than just a ball hawk this game, he was also a vocal leader. He talked to the defense at halftime and told the team to buckle down and not commit unneccesary penalties.

"Arkee is coming along to become a real vocal leader in the secondary,'' said B-CU Head Coach Brian Jenkins. "He's a workhorse guy."

The defense for the Wildcats gave up 169 rushing yards and 244 yards total to the Tigers, who were able to move the ball early in the game.

"We can get a whole lot better on defense," Jenkins said. "Their running backs rushed for too much in my eyes. We just didn't tackle well."
