DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - There were moments of brilliance for Bethune-Cookman Sunday afternoon in its match with South Carolina Upstate and there were moments of uh, ... er...hmm ... not so brilliance?
"Best way to describe it," Head Coach Isaac Raphael concurred as those not so brilliance led to the Lady Wildcats dropping a 3-0 (25-23,25-21,25-15) decision in historic Moore Gym.
Krysta Gardner had a nice stat line - her eighth double-double of the season (14 kills, 10 digs) as well as a career-high seven service aces. Freshman Aubrianna Curtis reached double figures assists for the third time, finishing with 12. B-CU nearly pulled off a cool comeback in the opening set, scoring eight straight points to force a 23-23 tie.
But there were also unforced errors and a third set where B-CU (9-12) was held to -.048 hitting.
"We've lost some focus," Raphael said. "Every season has peaks and valleys and we're in a valley right now. "
Morgan Thomas led the Spartans (7-13) with 13 kills, while Emily Sanders had 26 assists and eight digs.
Jennifer Jimenez' service run brought the Wildcats back to that first set tie after the visitors took a 23-15 lead. B-CU jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the second set and led 17-12 at one point.
Janeen Davis finished with nine kills and five digs, while Kenya Parker posted two assists and six digs.
