WASHINGTON – Bethune-Cookman couldn't get its offense going, but Howard's Saadia Doyle did to lead the Lady Bison to a 54-39 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory Monday evening in Burr Gymnasium.
The league's leading scorer double-doubled with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Howard (13-15 overall, 9-5) posted a season sweep of B-CU (12-13,5-8).
The Lady Wildcats never scored more than five consecutive points and finished shooting 31.1 percent (14-45) from the field.
“Poor shooting … the offense never got into a flow,” said B-CU coach Vanessa Blair.
B-CU's only lead came at 6-5 on Amanda Hairston's lay-up with 14:47 remaining in the first half. Howard scored the next eight points and led by as many as 12 in the first half.
B-CU scored five points in the final seven seconds of the period – a Jasmine Bugg free throws – to cut it to 27-20 at halftime.
Tamora Holmes scored Howard's first seven points as the Lady Bison lead got back to double-figures.
Trailing 44-29, Sarah Bolden hit a jumper and Elum finished another three-point play to make it 44-34 with 8:18 left, but Howard's Cheyene Curley Payne sank consecutive three-pointers and kept B-CU scoreless four minutes to pull away.
Elum led B-CU with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Bolden and Hairston each had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
