Fall Tennis Preview

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Bethune-Cookman men's tennis team will be in two places at the same time this weekend as the fall tennis season opens.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER: Four Wildcat men -- Diego Garavito, Kip Jackson, Santiago Lobelo and Moritz Pronath - are heading to Gainesville, Fla. to compete in the University of Florida Bedford Cup Invitational. The remainder of the team, along with the women's squad, is staying closer to home at nearby Embry-Riddle for its three-day tournament.

MEN'S FALL OUTLOOK:  Pronath returns for his sophomore season after injuries cut short a freshman campaign that saw him go 11-7 in singles play.  Lobelo was 11-12 overall, but 8-5 at No. 3 singles. Jackson (10-7 in 2011) is the lone senior on the squad. Garavito was 14-12 in doubles play last year. Juan Varon, who will play in Daytona Beach this weekend, was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) second team. B-CU was 14-14 last season, advancing to the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament.

WOMEN'S FALL OUTLOOK: The Lady Wildcats lose No. 1 singles player Stacey Speller, but return a promising trio of sophomores in Gaby Chinchilla (16-8 in 2011), Chinatsu Kajiwara (14-8) and Gvantsa Robakidze (14-9). Shareen Peterson-Paul, the lone senior, is coming off a junior season in which she was a team-best 18-7 in singles play and 17-6 in doubles. She was named a Second Team All-MEAC selection. B-CU was 20-7 last year under first-year head coach Tim Pleasant.
