ATLANTA - The Bethune-Cookman men's tennis went unbeaten while the women dropped just two of 11 matches on the opening day of the HBCU National Tennis Championships Thursday at the Clayton County Tennis Center.
All eight Wildcat singles players advanced to the quarterfinals and both doubles teams to the semifinals. Action resumes Friday morning.
The women's team has five singles player and a doubles team still in the winner's bracket.
In the Men's "A" flight, Juan Varon defeated Morehouse's Nate Sickler 6-1, 6-0 while Leo Lima defeated Prairie View A&M's Ronald Chidzike 6-3,6-3.
In the Men's "B" flight, Santiago Lobelo defeated Morehouse's Kahai Hall 6-0 6-3 and Seve Day defeated Trenton Johnson of Prairie View A&M, 6-4 6-0. Diego Garavito defeated Darreus Wheeler of Benedict 6-0,6-1.
Moritz Pronath made his fall debut by defeating Hampton's Lakshmana Satchithanathan 6-3 6-2 in the "C" flight while Kip Jackson won by default and Gilbert Kilbet beat North Carolina Central's Farbrice George 7-5,6-1.
In the "A" doubles, Lobelo/Garavito downed Hampton's Satchithanathan/Advait Kirtame 9-8 while Day/Varon downed Shane Latchman/Zibusiso Ndimande of Benedict 8-3 to remain unbeaten in the fall.
In Men's "B" doubles, Lima/Jackson defeated Deanglo Smith/Tim Thornton of Benedict by default and then won over North Carolina Central's Jamal Hoyte/Tamina Klenka by an 8-3 count. The combo of Pronath/Kilbet downed Morehouse's James Presley/Nate Sinckler 8-0 and then beat North Carolina Central's Jose Fabara/George 9-7.
For the B-CU women, Chinatsu Kajiwara defeated Lerato Ndlovu of Prairie View A&M 6-1,6-1 in the "A" flight.
In the "B" flight, Maria Dimitrova downed Savannah State's Esmira Gheisery 6-2,6-3 and Marina Sicic of Delaware State, 6-0 6-2. Shereen Peterson-Paul downed Victoria Austin of North Carolina A&T, 6-4,6-2.
The lone B-CU singles setback was Gaby Chinchilla falling to Kendall Bunch of Southern 7-5 6-3 in the "C" flight. Laura Rodriguez and Ancia Ifill each registered two victories to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ifill/Rodriguez downed Benedict's Wittington/Darnel Howlett 8-1 in the "B" doubles. Arkansas Pine-Bluff's Maria Cabane and Fabiola Cardoso downed Dimitrova/Peterson-Paul 8-4.
