November 16, 2013

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Quarterbacks Jackie Wilson and Quentin Williams combined for three rushing touchdowns as No. 18/16 Bethune-Cookman bounced back with a 42-12 Senior Day victory over Hampton on Saturday before 4,104 patrons at Municipal Stadium.

Bethune-Cookman (9-2 overall, 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference ) defeated visiting Hampton (4-7, 4-3) for the sixth consecutive time and set the stage for next week's Florida Blue Florida Classic against Florida A&M determining the Wildcats' playoff destiny. A Wildcats victory over the Rattlers would give them the MEAC's automatic berth into the FCS Playoffs.

B-CU has not lost consecutive regular season games to FCS opponents in the Brian Jenkins era. In fact, the only time B-CU has lost consecutive FCS contests was at the end of the 2010 regular- and postseason when the Wildcats lost to Florida A&M in the Walt Disney Florida Classic, followed by a defeat at the hands of New Hampshire in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.

B-CU senior quarterback Jackie Wilson staked the Wildcats to an early 14-0 lead. He rushed for 59 yards on an 87-yard scoring march that culminated with a six-yard pass to Cary White with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter. He then scored on a five-yard run on the Wildcats' next possession.

Wilson had 74 yards rushing – his highest since a 113-yard effort against North Carolina Central in 2010 – before leaving the contest in the second quarter with an injury.

Quentin Williams took over for the bulk of the remainder of the game, gaining 65 yards on the ground and scoring twice.

After Hampton cut it to 14-3 on an Anthony Prevost field goal, an 82-yard Darian Baker kickoff return to the Pirates 15 yard line set up Williams' first touchdown on a one-yard keeper with 2:23 left before halftime. He added a second score – a five-yarder – on the opening play of the fourth quarter.

B-CU's defense, which kept the Pirates out of the end zone until the final five minutes of the game, helped the offense recover from a pair of third period fumbles as the Wildcats pulled away with its potent and deep rushing game.

With senior running back Isidore Jackson on the sidelines after gaining 102 yards in the opening half, it was freshman Michael Jones (72 yards) and Drexler Dixon (60) adding consecutive scores as B-CU racked up a season-best 475 yards via the ground.

Eddie Poole caught two passes for 26 yards and extended his pass-catching streak to 46 games in his final home game as a Wildcats receiver. Safeties Nick Addison and Marquis Drayton registered interceptions, while defensive linemen Tevin Toney and LeBrandon Richardson each had five tackles and combined on a fourth-down stop in the third quarter.

Bethune-Cookman completes the regular season portion of its schedule next weekend at Orlando's Citrus Bowl, taking on instate rival Florida A&M at 2 p.m. The game will be carried live on ESPN Classic, later to be shown in replay on ESPNU.
