ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Sophomore
Patrizia Trevisan scored a two-round total of one-over-par 145 to help the
Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf team sweep individual and team titles at the B-CU Gary
Freeman Spring Invitational on Monday afternoon. The event was hosted by
Bethune-Cookman at the Halifax Plantation Golf Club in Ormond Beach, Fla.
In their spring debut, the Wildcats women's
team was forced to alter its tee times due to weather. Frost covered much of
the Halifax Plantation playing surface during the early morning hours on Sunday,
causing the men's field to delay its start for almost 30 minutes. Thus, the
women were delayed in their start. Play was suspended Sunday evening on account
of darkness, and resumed Monday at 9 a.m.
Seemingly unaffected by the delays was B-CU's
Patrizia Trevisan, a native of Leopololsdorf, Austria, as she shot even-par in
her opening round. She followed that with a one-over round to conclude the
tournament. Trevisan shot an eagle-two in her opening round on the 15th hole,
followed by three consecutive pars to close out her opening 18 holes of play.
She finished the weekend with just seven bogeys across 36 holes.
"I felt good out there yesterday and today
despite the cold weather," said Trevisan after staking claim to her second
individual tournament title of the 2012-13 campaign. "The course had difficult
pin locations, but I was able to hit it close and putt well. That was really
what helped me."
As a team, the B-CU women used the
combination of Trevisan, Jennifer Hide, Andrea Orozco, Marie Bergelin and
Vanessa Adarme to take the tournament championship for the second consecutive
year.
Orozco, a sophomore from Cancun, Mexico,
finished tied for third in the individual standings as she fired off a
two-round total of 15-over-par 189 on a very difficult course with weather
distractions all weekend.
Florida Atlantic's Anna Wiklund finished with
an identical score after rounds of 78 and 81, respectively.
B-CU junior Marie Bergelin was tied for
eighth as she fired an opening round 81, and finished with an 83 in her following
round to register a score of 164 for the event. Teammate Vanessa Adarme shot
180, and Hide fired a 10-over 82 in her only round of the weekend.
Hide, a sophomore from Norfolk, England,
played just a single round before withdrawing due to an injury. She will have
surgery on her arm in the near future, while her spring season is to be cut
short. An update on her status will be announced following her surgery.
Northern Illinois was second in the final
team count, using a score of 651, followed by FAU (654), Towson (671), Hampton
(695) and Savannah State (761).
NIU's Allie Parthie was the tournament
runner-up with a scorecard of 13-over-par 157. Playing as an individual, Laval
Universitie member Alexandra Pelletier rounded out the top five - behind Orozco
and Wiklund, firing a 16-over-par 160.
Named after legendary golf coach Dr. Gary
Freeman, the annual event was started by current head coach Loritz "Scooter"
Clark to pay tribute to a man that was the face of the B-CU golf program for
many years before retiring and eventually passing away just under two years
ago.
The Wildcats head back on the course again
when traveling to the Butler Invitational taking place March 10-12 in Jacksonville,
Fla.
