LOPATCONG, N.J. –
Reese Wilson served as the low-scorer for Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf on Tuesday afternoon, as the Wildcats completed the two-day PCT Autumn Harvest hosted by Lehigh at the Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, New Jersey. The tournament was played as a 54-hole event on a par 71, 6,111-yard course.
Competing in their second event of the fall campaign, the Wildcats used a similar lineup from the season-opening Bridgestone HBCU Invitational in Duluth, Georgia.
Bethune-Cookman posted rounds of 315, 313 and 323, respectively, as Quinnipiac claimed the team title with a score of 864 (+12), holding off second place host Lehigh by four strokes.
"We had some bright spots out there, but we didn't put together the consistent rounds we needed to move up the leaderboard on the final day," commented Head Coach Harry Stokes. "Sixth place isn't where we want to be, but there were moments where we showed what we're capable of."
Reese Wilson, a junior transfer from Chicago, Illinois, led B-CU's effort, tying for 14th place individually with a three-round total of 228 (+15). Wilson, a former student-athlete at Butler, opened with a 77 before improving to 74 in the second round and finishing with a 77.
Facing her former side for the first time, junior
Lathika Krishna – a transfer from LIU, tied for 24th overall, shooting rounds of 76-77-81 for a 234 (+21) total. It was senior
Skylar Kew finishing 31st in the field with a 245 (+32) after rounds of 79, 80 and 86, respectfully.
"I'm proud of how the team battled through some tough conditions on a beautiful course," continued Stokes afterwards. "We had a couple players who really stepped up and posted some solid numbers. That's encouraging moving forward."
Rounding out the scoring for the Maroon and Gold were a pair of freshmen in the fork of
Lana Bowen and
Mia Bernier. Bowen, a native of Ada, Oklahoma, tied for 33rd place with a 248 (+35), posting scores of 83, 82 and 83. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico native Bernier tied for 37th with a 250 (+37) total, recording rounds of 86, 82 and 82.
"We left some strokes out there," added Stokes. "When you're competing at this level, you can't afford to have those lapses in concentration. We'll go back, look at what we can clean up, and come back stronger."
Quinnipiac's Sophia Fujita captured medalist honors, firing a tournament-best 204 (9-under) with rounds of 69-68-67. Lehigh's Stefania Fedun finished second at even par with a 213 total.
"We had some good individual rounds, but in a team format, we need everyone firing on all cylinders at the same time," remarked Stokes. "That's what wins tournaments."
Bethune-Cookman will next compete at the Powercat Invitational hosted by Kansas State. The tournament runs October 20-21, in Manhattan, Kansas.
