GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Lady Wildcats take to the road
once again in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, hitting the Tarheel
State for a pair of rematch contests, beginning with Saturday's North Carolina
A&T (14-7, 6-2 MEAC) matchup. On a two-game win streak, with victories in
three of the last four, Bethune-Cookman (10-10, 5-3 MEAC) looks to keep the
momentum going into the homestretch. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
In the first contest between these teams, Chastity René Taylor, Shakeyia
Colyer and Jasmine Evans led the Lady Wildcats in a triumphant second half
comeback to top the Lady Aggies for the first time since the 2006 MEAC
Basketball Championships, winning 69-64 at Moore Gymnasium. Saturday, B-CU can't
rely on such heroics, battling it out with N.C. A&T at the Corbett Sports
Center, where the Lady Aggies are 8-2.
About the North Carolina
A&T Lady Aggies
N.C. A&T came out of
the loss to B-CU leading to a 4-1 record and are currently on a four-game
winning streak, continuing to hold serve among to most winning teams in the
conference on the leadership of JaQuayla Berry, Amber
Calvin and Tracy King. The Lady Aggies spread the floor on opponents to the
tune of 62.1 PPG.
Berry tops the Lady Aggies in scoring (12.7 PPG), rebounds
(6.5 RPG) and steals (1.9 SPG, lead shared with Calvin). She proved effective
in the first go-around with B-CU, scoring 16 and grabbing eight rebounds.
Tracy King, on the other hand, was the leader for N.C.
A&T the last time these teams met, putting up 18 on .500 shooting, while
also grabbing seven boards. She averages 10.4 PPG and 6.0 RPG.
Contained for just two points in the first matchup, Calvin
poses a threat to B-CU on her home court, shooting 44.4 percent from three
point range, leading a perimeter shooting outfit that averages nearly five
makes per game, and shoots 14 per contest.
About the Lady Wildcats
Bethune-Cookman has momentum and has been playing with a
total-team effort lately, which will be needed to spread the Lady Aggies'
defense and create more opportunities. Taylor and Terrenisha Hollis are who's
hot right now. Taylor brings the consistency of 14.9 PPG and 2.6 3FG per outing,
with double-digit scoring in 16 games this season. She led all scorers with 19
the last meeting.
Hollis, on the other hand has found her groove since
hitting MEAC play, averaging 11.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 2.8 SPG against MEAC
opponents. Since opening conference play, she's grabbed three double-doubles. She
had seven points and 11 boards in the first meeting.
Three other players are expected to impact the outcome
with their play in order to ensure B-CU's success. Colyer scored 17 with five
rebounds and four assists the first time and will help to spread the defense
and take some heat off the other guards. Sixth man Evans scored 11 on .500
shooting last time, hitting key shots to aid the comeback. Last time these teams
met, it began a slump for center Amanda Hairston, but with her play against
Florida A&M (10 Pts./9 Reb.), she could be back in the mix to create
problems for N.C. A&T in a homecoming for the Greensboro native.
The top key for B-CU is to limit Lady Aggies steals and
their own turnovers. Protecting the ball and forcing N.C. A&T into missteps
will allow the Lady Wildcats to dictate the pace of the game, an outcome that
has proven quite successful for B-CU.
