#WildcatWINSday: '73 Team Put 'Cats Back on Title Track

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - With 52 days to go in the “24kCountdown to Kickoff”, every Wednesday features a special team, game or unique moment as it relates to Wildcats football throughout the rich history of the Maroon and Gold.

This week, we're taking a look back at the 1973 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAC) Co-Champion Wildcats, who snapped a 21-year drought of championships and victories over rival Florida A&M. Under the direction of rookie coach Wesley Moore , Bethune-Cookman College captured the SIAC crown with a 9-2 record and a 6-0 league mark.

For the first time since 1952, the Wildcats enjoyed a victory over the Rattlers, and did it in Tallahassee to boot with a 21-13 decision at Bragg Stadium.

Running backs Randy “Sweetback” Walker and Wayne Allen paced an offense that averaged over 350 yards a game, while the defense surrendered just under 175 yards on average. The Wildcats never scored less than 13 points in any game of the campaign.

The season started with a four-game winning streak and finished with the Wildcats running off five straight.

Honors and awards poured in following the season, as Moore garnered the SIAC Coach of the Year and was joined by 15 players on All-Conference teams. Eight players received All-American status.

It was also a great year for Wildcats alumni, as Boobie Clark was named NFL Rookie of the Year. He was drafted the previous season by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 4th round of the NFL Draft, Clark was the AFC's fourth-leading rusher with 988 yards and caught 45 passes for 347 yards.
