ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Bethune-Cookman erased a two-set deficit and was at match point three times, but South Carolina State pulled out a 3-2 (25-20,25-21,25-27,20-25,18-16) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division victory Friday night in Dukes Gym.

Delicia Pierre had 17 kills, while Rhea Simon and Destiny Hudson posted career highs with 13 and 12 kills, respectively as the Lady Cats (1-15 overall, 0-1 MEAC) battled back for a 2-0 deficit in the conference opener for both teams.

B-CU had leads of 14-13, 15-14, and 16-15 – two coming off Hudson kills – in the final set – before the Bulldogs (1-13,1-0) scored the final three points for their second straight five-set win over the Lady Cats in as many meetings.

In the third set, B-CU saw a 15-11 lead fade and was down 25-24, but staved off match point with a Phylecia Armstrong kill and then got a two-point service run from Jennifer Jimenez to extend the match.

B-CU never trailed in the fourth set and led 20-9 after service runs from Jimenez and Alexas Thomas. South Carolina State closed to 22-19, but two Hudson kills helped the Lady Cats force the tiebreaker.

South Carolina State held off B-CU rallies in the first two sets. The Lady Cats cut an 18-12 deficit to 19-18 in the opener and trimmed a 14-8 Bulldog advantage to 20-19 in the second.

Pierre, a sophomore, also had three service aces, and two blocks.

In addition to her career-high for kills, Simon, also a sophomore, posted a second-career high with five service aces. Hudson hit .296.
