MACON, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman fell behind 10-0 at the outset and never recovered as Mercer downed the Wildcats 67-46 Friday night at Hawkins Arena.
Ike Nwamu scored 22 points as the Bears (6-5) handed the Wildcats (3-8) their third straight loss.
The Wildcats didn't get on the board until a Denzil Dulin free throw 4:15 in the game. Dulin, making his return to the Wildcat roster after missing five games due to injury, also made B-CU's first field goal on a three-pointer with 13:41 to play.
Mercer led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Clemmye Owens, who drew two early fouls, scored six points in the final four minutes, and Maurice Taylor drained a three-pointer with 1:17 remaining that cut the deficit to 33-24 at halftime.
The Bears rebuilt a 15-point lead that the Wildcats brought back to 43-34 on a Taylor lay-up with 13:10 to play, but Mercer scored the next eight points to pull away.
Owens led the Wildcats with 10 points, followed by Quintin Brewer with eight and Dulin with seven. Brandon Stewart, making his 2014-15 debut, had six points and a team-high five rebounds.
