CAYCE, S.C. – Bethune-Cookman advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament semifinals with a 4-2 victory over Morgan State Thursday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
Seeding fourth from the Southern Division, the Wildcats (6-17) will face Norfolk State, a 4-0 winner over Coppin State, Friday at noon. B-CU advanced to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.
Bethune-Cookman rebounded from dropping the doubles by winning four of five singles matches. It's the second straight match the Wildcats have won after losing the doubles competition.
Alvaro Barrera, Greg Almeida and Diego Garavito registered victories to bring the Wildcats within one point of taking match. The Bears (4-12) closed to 3-2, but Santiago Lobelo, the lone Wildcat senior, closed the match with a 6-2,6-3 victory over Evan Ward at No. 2 singles.
Walid Gtari and Barrera registered the Wildcats' lone doubles victory.
Bethune-Cookman's win finished a Southern Division sweep of the Northern Division on the opening day of the tournament.
