CAYCE, S.C. – Bethune-Cookman fell 4-0 to Norfolk State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament semifinals Friday at Cayce Tennis And Fitness Center.
The Spartans (14-6) will face South Carolina State in the championship Saturday afternoon, weather permitting.
Bethune-Cookman beat Morgan State, the top seed from the Northern Division, in Thursday's quarterfinals. They finish the season 6-18.
The Wildcats had one senior – Santiago Lobelo – on the roster for the season as they overcame the passing of Juan Varon Munoz in a traffic accident during the fall semester. Freshman Alvaro Barrera finished with a 14-8 record in singles play, followed by junior Diego Garavito at 12-9.
“We were picked finish fourth in the Southern Division. We met that expectation, but I truly believe we exceeded in other aspects,” said B-CU Head Coach Tim Pleasant. “Many thought we couldn't be successful due to losing Juan, but his spirit lifted us throughout. We played a tough schedule with nationally ranked teams both Division I and non-Division I, and we competed in every match. The guys played hard, and I love them for that.”
