Bethune-Cookman Downs UMES, 75-65

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Four Bethune-Cookman players logged double figures in the scoring column, led by Jasmine Knowles with 17, as the Lady Wildcats took down Maryland Eastern Shore, 75-65, in MEAC women's basketball action at Moore Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

With Bethune-Cookman (7-13, 4-3 MEAC) trailing 29-21 with four minutes remaining in the first half, Emily Williams netted a three-pointer to begin a 10-2 run to end the half for the Lady Wildcats. Kayla Crawford registered six of her 12 points for the game during the final two minutes of the opening stanza, bringing B-CU to a 31-all tie with UMES at the break.

In the second half, the two teams went back and forth with nine lead changes and almost an identical amount of ties.

UMES (6-10, 3-3 MEAC) used a free throw from Jessica Long, who finished the game with a game-high 20 points, to push ahead at 34-33, just under two minutes into the final half. Moments later, Bethune-Cookman earned its first lead of the game on the strength of a Crawford jumper inside the paint, giving the Lady Cats a 35-34 advantage.

B-CU pushed the lead to 40-36 with 16:16 remaining after a three-point play from Terrenisha Hollis, who added the free throw following the basket and foul. UMES answered back when Shawnee Sweeney connected on her fifth three-pointer of the game, cutting the lead at 40-39.

Following back-to-back jumpers from Long, the Lady Hawks of UMES had countered with a four-point advantage of their own at 44-40.

The lead never grew above that four-point edge for the Lady Hawks as Emily Williams connected on another three-pointer, and teammate Kailyn Williams scored inside the paint off an assist from Kendra Cooper. That brought the homestanding Lady Wildcats back to a deadlock at 53-all with 10:10 remaining in the second half.

After UMES' Alexus Hicks found her way through the paint for a layup, knotting the game at 56-56, the Lady Wildcats used an explosive scoring outburst down the stretch to run away with their third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory.

With Cooper delivering five points in a span of 44 seconds to extend the B-CU lead at 65-59, the Spring, Texas sophomore waited just 30 seconds to net her 16th point of the game, a three-pointer from the right side to put the Lady Wildcats at a sizeable 68-59 advantage heading into the final media timeout with under four minutes to play.

Crawford added a jumper in the paint, while teammate Knowles contributed a layup to increase the lead at 72-59.

Adrienne Phillips came off the bench late to add a pair of free throws before UMES' Chalyse Taylor connected on a short jumper with 13 seconds remaining to bring the score to a final of 75-65.

The current three-game conference winning streak matches last year's run near the end of the regular season, as the longest for the Lady Wildcats since 2011-12.

Maryland Eastern Shore was powered in the game by Jessica Long with a game-high 20 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. She was followed in the scoring column by Sweeney with 19, while Moengaroa Subritzky added a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
