DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman University women's basketball team improved to 7-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition after the Wildcats dismantled the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles, earning their largest league victory of the season, 71-57, Saturday, Feb. 14 in Moore Gym.
A balanced scoring effort guided B-CU to its third-straight home victory, while three Cats finished in double figures, and six of the nine that saw minutes collected at least five.
Redshirt senior Terrenisha Hollis (Birmingham, Ala.) led B-CU on the offensive end with a team-best 18, shooting 6-for-13 from the field, 1-for-3 from behind the arc and 5-for-5 from the line.
The sophomore-Texan duo, Kendra Cooper (Spring, Texas) and Alea Godfrey (Barrett Station, Texas) trailed Hollis with 17 and 11 respectively.
A quick basket and foul from Hollis during the opening minute gave the Wildcats an early 3-0 lead.
NCCU redshirt senior Nikki Works answered, knocking down a three-ball from Rachel Williams, as the game saw its only tie at the 19 minute mark.
A Cooper shot from downtown silenced the Eagles 30 seconds later, and it was all Wildcats after that.
Hollis knocked down a jumper at the 12:36 mark, giving B-CU its first double-digit lead of the game, up 11, 21-10.
On top of NCCU with 7:39 left before the break, the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to gain their largest lead of the contest at 35-18.
Senior Adrienne Phillips (League City, Texas) finished under the basket as the first half clock expired and B-CU took a 40-25 advantage into the locker room.
The nagging Eagles did not die at the break.
NCCU opened the final twenty minutes on a 12-5 run, when a Tisha Dixon free throw knocked the Wildcat lead down to six (48-39) with 12:02 left in the contest.
Six would be as close as the Eagles could get.
B-CU finished the final four minutes on an 11-5 run following a head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis timeout, were she refocused the Cats, as they pushed out their largest MEAC victory of the season with the 71-57 victory.
NCCU was carried by redshirt senior Khyra Conerly's 19 points, while Kristin Askew and Tia Clement chipped in ten apiece.
Redshirt sophomore Kailyn Williams (New Orleans, La.) was too much down low for the MEAC's leading rebounder and fourth leading scorer as the B-CU defense held NCCU's Racquel Davis to only four boards and a single point during the Wildcat victory.
K. Williams pulled down a game-best 15 boards while swatting eight Eagles shots in addition to her seven points.
B-CU returns to action on Monday, Feb. 16 as the Wildcats host North Carolina A&T at 5:30 p.m.
