DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1 victory over Delaware Tuesday afternoon at City Island Tennis Center.
Alexander Chepik returned to the singles line-up and registered both a singles and victories as a still shorthanded Wildcat squad improved to 12-11. Chepik hadn't played single since March 16.
The Wildcats set the stage for a key match Thursday with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe South Carolina State, the perennial champions. The Wildcats and South Carolina State both have 3-0 records in conference play.
“The guys are just trying to get healthy,” said B-CU head coach Tim Pleasant. “We got Chepik back and he seems to be almost 90%, but we still got guys at 50-60% and one guy still out of singles.
“Going into South Carolina State, we are a bit healthier, but not at full strength,” Pleasant added. “We are about 70 percent right now, and hopefully next when we play Florida A&M, we're at 80-90 percent and then by tournament we are hoping for full strength.”
After taking the doubles points, B-CU ran off singles victories from Chepik, Diego Garavito and Greg Almeida to clinch the victory.
Garavito and Almeida each registered their tenth singles victory of the season.
