Men's Tennis Advances At MEAC Tournament

CAYCE, S.C. – Bethune-Cookman's 4-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal victory over Howard Friday was just as much about playing smart as it was being efficient.

With a possible semifinal against North Carolina Central looming in the afternoon, the Wildcats (14-12) wasted little time finish a match suspended by weather the day. That match with North Carolina Central was postponed to Saturday morning due to weather.

When Alvaro Barrera stepped off the court, North Carolina Central and Morgan State were just starting singles, but quickness wasn't the priority.

“We were trying to end things NOT too quickly,” said B-CU Head Coach Tim Pleasant. “We wanted to play smart – a couple of the guys were trying to win points in the first couple of shots … we wanted to play every point smart and outplay your opponent and win the majority of the games.”

On the cusp of winning the doubles point Thursday, the Wildcats finished it off fast. Up 7-0, Kevin Deligny and Gilbert Rotich only needed a couple of minutes to take No.3 doubles. Diego Garavito and Greg Almeida lost just one point in the final five games for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles to secure to point.

Deligny was the first in with his win at No.5 singles, followed by Alemeida and Barrera.
