@BCUVolleyball Continues Historic Start

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman volleyball added to its opening weekend historic start, as the Wildcats knocked off cross-town foe Stetson, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-18) before falling to Georgia Southern, 3-0 (29-27, 26-24, 25-14) during day-two of the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton, Florida.

Game One

 B-CU opened tournament play squaring off with Volusia County rival, Stetson, during the early-morning match.

After pulling off a close 25-23 victory in set one, a game that saw seven ties and six lead changes, it was all B-CU for the final two sets as the Wildcats cruised to 25-15 and 25-18 victories.

The three game sweep over the Hatters marked the first time B-CU had beaten Stetson in the last 12 attempts, dating back to Sept. 11, 2009.

Moving to 2-1 on the season, the Wildcats also recorded the programs best start since 2006 when B-CU opened 3-0.

Delicia Pierre continued to lead the Wildcat offensive force, recording a match-best 15 kills, while Hazel Ortiz Rosado led all with 23 assists.

Defensively, Normarie Rolon snagged a team-best 11 digs, while Ortiz Rosado earned her third-straight double-double with 10 digs in addition to Alexuas Bennett's 10.

On the net Phyleica Armstrong put away four block assists as the Wildcats deflected 10 Stetson hits, compared to the Hatters 3.

Game Two

Despite nine ties and three lead changes in the first set of match-two, B-CU was unable to keep momentum going during the Wildcat's showdown with Georgia Southern.

B-CU suffered two extra-point losses during the first and second game (29-27, 26-24), before falling 25-14 in the final set.

Pierre led the Wildcats for the fourth-straight match with 12 kills, while Ortiz Rosado earned her fourth double-double dishing 30 assists with 17 digs.

Quoting Coach Williams:

 “Finishing 2-2 on the weekend was a great start and all-around effort by the entire team. I am very excited for what this season holds.”
